Lice Protocol

Prevention, screening and treatment

Last updated on 27 Mar, 2025

We work hard to ensure a healthy, comfortable experience for all campers and staff by preventing and effectively managing lice outbreaks. Lice present absolutely no health danger, yet they are a nuisance that can spread easily through close contact.

To help prevent lice outbreaks, we require all parents check their child’s hair for head lice two weeks before departure for camp and then again right before you leave for Opening Day.

Campers must arrive lice- and nit-free. If lice are found before camp, they must be treated before arrival.

All campers will undergo a cursory head check on Opening Day. Please note that this is a quick screening to confirm parental commitment that their child is lice-free before arriving at camp—it is not a thorough lice check.

If a camper is found to have live lice or nits on Opening Day they may:

  • Be sent home for treatment before returning.

  • Receive on-site treatment, if available, with parental permission and at the parents’ expense. Campers will remain isolated in the Health Center until the treatment is complete.

While at camp Campers must not share brushes, hats, pillows, or personal items that touch the hair.

If a camper is found with lice at camp:

  • Hair will be braided/tied back and covered until lice is treated.

  • Parents will be notified.

  • The camper may be sent home for treatment or can be treated by an external company coordinated through camp and paid for by parents.

  • Bunkmates will be checked as a precaution.

  • Bedding and personal items may be washed to prevent spread.
